Architectural Design 4 - Assignment 2
67 Edward Street, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
27°28'14.9"S - 153°01'46.6"E
The office is envisioned as a modern, open plan space which encourages interaction through mixed use of areas. The ground floor aims to emulate the atmosphere of the street which highlights the heritage character of the area. The main construction materials of cross laminated timber and brick blend the beauty of the past with an office of the future.
The building utilities passive design and the latest technology to lower energy use and promote connection to the environment. The parametric facade design is shaped from the existing trees on the street, and works to shade the building whilst being respectful to the surrounding architecture. The inner side of the facade hosts a vertical garden system which recirculates water runoff from air-conditioning systems and rain.
Circulation and Organisation
The layout of the office is split into two halves - A main circulation area which is open and an enclosed air-conditioned office space. The ground floor of the building uses curved walls which are set from the central axis of the atrium void. Each level is centered around this central core, which stacks 8 executive offices.
The Parametric Facade
The facade of the building is created by analyzing trees on the street to create a monocromatic image of the canopy. This then emulates the atmospheric lighting of Edward Street within the office. The design effectively shields from the sun, shapes wind, and adds privacy. The final form was created using Grasshopper and Ladybug software.
Site Analysis and Diagrams
The office design incorporates a number of passive cooling systems which have been analyzed through sun studies and climate data.
